The Secret Garden - Macro Themed Land Concept - Paultons Park:
The Challenge:
How do you create total immersion through the manipulation of scale?
As Paultons Park continues to set a new gold standard for regional theme parks, this conceptual study serves as a tribute to my ‘experience first’ ethos. The challenge was to architect a 360-degree environment that utilises forced perspective to shift the guest's perception of reality, moving them from a standard park visitor to a shrunken explorer within a living ecosystem.
The Concept:
Focusing on total sensory immersion, ‘The Secret Garden’ is a macro-world designed to engage all five senses. My creative approach centred on a narrative where every touchpoint - from high-energy rides to themed F&B - serves a detailed, ‘shrunken’ storyline. I explored how oversized theming and environmental cues can be used as narrative tools, ensuring the guest feels like a small critter navigating a giant, vibrant landscape.
The Storyline:
Welcome to 'The Secret Garden,' where YOU, the adventurers, are shrunk down and transported into the magical world of bugs in this fully immersive, larger-than-life environment.
As you step into this enchanting land, you'll find yourselves navigating gigantic blades of grass, dodging dewdrops the size of boulders and participating in exhilarating rides like Butterflyers, Spider’s Lair and The Cater-coaster.
Take a stroll through Honeycomb Haven, where you can enjoy themed foods like pollen pastries and nectar slushies.
Engage ALL your senses with enormous interactive props, photo ops, or take a dive into a blooming flower. Watch out for those sneaky Venus flytraps!
Throughout this adventure, be entertained by street performances such as ‘The Antics’ and ‘Hive Harmony ft Queen Bee.’
The Experience:
The result is an immersive journey that captures the playful joy of childhood wonder. By synchronising the smell of cut grass with vivid, oversized theming and a bespoke soundscape, this story-driven experience triggers a nostalgic emotional response. This project proved that through blue-sky thinking and narrative-led design, we can transform a physical space into a memory-making engine that celebrates imagination and exploration.
______
Detonator Drop Em' - Gamifying The Guest Journey - Thorpe Park:
The Challenge:
Why let queue time be ‘dead time’?
This conceptual study explores bridging the gap between physical attractions and mobile UX to transform a passive wait into an active, social experience. The objective was to explore how Thorpe Park could evolve its legacy assets by incorporating digital innovation into existing ride systems – turning a logistical necessity into a high-engagement pre-show.
The Concept:
‘Detonator: Drop Em’ is a system that gamifies the guest journey by allowing the audience to control the ride’s physical drop timing via their smartphones. By putting the power of ‘The Detonator’ in the hands of the guests, the project creates unpredictable interactivity, turning onlookers and those in the queue into active participants.
The Experience:
The result is a total shift in the guest dynamic – moving from passive observer to ‘Controller’. By leveraging real-time mobile synchronisation, the experience creates an unpredictable atmosphere that encourages repeat playability. This project proves that by staying ahead of tech-trends, we can breathe new life into classic assets, ensuring they remain relevant and ‘social-ready’ for a modern, digitally-native audience.
______
Excavator - Narrative Ride Design - Alton Towers:
The Challenge:
How do you design a high-intensity experience that feels physically rooted in its themed environment?
Currently, there is a clear market opportunity for Alton Towers to boost its ‘flat ride’ offering to improve guest throughput and overall attendance. This study explores using ‘thematic implication’ to transform a standard, off-the-shelf ride system into a narrative-heavy landmark that complements the legacy of Forbidden Valley, providing a high-capacity solution that doesn't compromise on immersion.
The Concept:
Excavator. The ride concept focuses on environmental storytelling, using the attraction’s mechanical movements to suggest a relentlessly active excavation site that is disturbing more than just the earth. I focused on an industrial aesthetic where the ride functions as a piece of heavy machinery unearthing a buried threat. Beyond the visual concept art, I architected a multi-sensory layer of effects – including synchronised SFX sparks and a bespoke soundscape – triggered in real-time to match the ride’s physical cycle.
The Storyline:
The towering Excavator ride in the Forbidden Valley at Alton Towers, operated by ‘The Phalanx,’ relentlessly digs into the earth, unaware of the dark forces it may awaken...
The Experience:
The result is a total shift in guest perception – moving from the thrill of a ‘flat ride’ to the adrenaline of a mysterious event. As the machine accelerates, the synchronised sensory cues create a feeling of mechanical instability. This project proved that by identifying gaps in the park’s attraction mix, the sky is the limit for ideas when delivering high-level immersion and increased guest capacity through a single, story-driven asset.
______
Nemesis Inferno - 25th Anniversary Asset Modernisation - Thorpe Park:
The Challenge:
How do you prepare an icon for its next quarter-century?
This conceptual study focuses on asset modernisation, exploring how targeted creative interventions can revitalise legacy attractions without losing their heritage. The challenge was to celebrate the legend of the B&M Invert while evolving the environmental storytelling and visual identity to resonate with a new generation of riders.
The Concept:
My creative approach centred on a comprehensive ‘glow-up’ that utilises Environmental Storytelling to deepen the ride’s volcanic narrative. I architected a modernised visual identity and striking new signage that reflects a contemporary aesthetic while remaining rooted in the original story. The vision included a revamped entrance portal to act as a high-impact threshold into the world, alongside intricate new rock work and purposeful landscaping designed to enhance the physical immersion of the tropical-volcanic setting.
The Experience:
The result is a total sensory revitalisation that moves the guest from nostalgia to fresh excitement. By integrating enhanced special effects – including synchronised smoke and heat triggers – the guest journey is transformed into a 360-degree, high-intensity adventure of blistering heat. This project proved that through Blue-Sky thinking and strategic asset evolution, we can breathe new life into classic attractions, ensuring they remain ‘must-see’ landmarks for years to come.
______
Enterprise - Narrative Ride Design - Alton Towers:
The Challenge:
How do you ensure a legacy asset remains competitive in a high-intensity land?
This study focuses on transforming a standalone flat ride into a functional, cohesive part of a wider psychological narrative. The objective was to create a strategic extension to the immersive storytelling seen in Alton Towers’ X Sector, ensuring a now-retired asset could still drive guest engagement within a world-class environment.
The Concept:
The creative approach centred on a strategic refresh of the Enterprise, integrating it directly into the ‘Ministry of Joy’ storyline. By aligning the creative direction with existing icons like The Smiler and Oblivion, I conceptualised a visual identity that serves the overarching theme of the park's most intense area. This involved architecting a narrative where the ride’s mechanical movement is no longer just a fairground thrill, but a purposeful part of a clinical experiment.
The Storyline:
The Enterprise – a colossal, entrancing and hypnotic wheel operated by the 'Ministry of Joy' – spins its subjects into smiling advocates, both while on board and from afar.
The Experience:
The result is a total shift from a standard ride to a ‘thematic experience’ for both riders and observers in the plaza – turning the attraction into a gigantic, hypnotising machine operated by the ‘Ministry of Joy’. This project proved that through blue-sky ideation and narrative alignment, we can revitalise legacy hardware, turning it into a mandatory ‘chapter’ of the guest experience within a themed land.
______
Riptide Rescue: Escape From Amity - Narrative Ride Design - Thorpe Park:
The Challenge:
How do you breathe new life into a classic land?
This conceptual study explores a narrative extension of Thorpe Park's iconic Amity Cove, 25 years after the legendary ‘Tidal Wave’ first hit. The objective was to use cutting-edge ride technology to evolve legacy IP, ensuring the quarter-century history of the land remains immersive and relevant for a modern, thrill-seeking audience.
The Concept:
Riptide Rescue: Escape From Amity combines nostalgia with excitement, utilising the new, innovative Mack Rides ‘Rocking Boat’ system – a hybrid boat-ride and rollercoaster. By leveraging the system's unique swaying and accelerating ‘pitch-and-roll’ movements, the concept physically manifests the chaos of a town lost to the tides. I architected the full-lifecycle vision – from the initial ride layout to the full 360-degree environmental storytelling – ensuring the ride’s unique mechanical profile serves as the primary engine for the narrative.
The Storyline:
Red Alert! After 25 years of battening down the hatches, Sheriff O'Hanlon is sending in the rescue team as a new storm brews on the horizon.
Fully immersed in this adventure, townsfolk embark on an exhilarating roller-coaster rescue mission, encountering numerous interactive features that showcase the town’s struggle against the rising tides. Boarding the rescue boats equipped with safety gear, emergency supplies and radio, the townsfolk are guided by the Sheriff himself, who urges everyone to evacuate.
The atmosphere is tense as radio static crackles; another wave is on its way and this rescue mission becomes a matter of urgency!
Townsfolk race through the streets of Amity Cove, dodging debris, crashing waves and bursting through iconic town scenes such as the WWTP Radio Studio!
The atmosphere shifts as the water level rises dramatically and the townsfolk plunge backward as if they have been swept away by the tides.
The boat then spirals upward, giving the townsfolk a thrilling view of the surrounding area before plummeting back down into the chaos! Emerging from the heart of the cove into Amity Speedway, they navigate a series of hairpin turns as the boat picks up speed, racing towards safety.
Buckle up and get ready to embark on this heart-pounding adventure!
The Experience:
The result is a total shift in water-ride dynamics, moving the guest from a standard ‘splash-down’ to a high-speed rollercoaster rescue mission. As the vessel navigates the wreckage of Amity, the synchronised movements create a physical sense of being at the mercy of the ocean. This project proved that through immersive storytelling and the strategic application of new ride technology, we can evolve a legacy land to deliver a world-class experience that resonates with both the original guests from 2000 and the new audiences of the future.
