The Challenge:
How do you elevate a scare attraction beyond a traditional ‘haunted house’? The original brief called for a linear jump-scare maze, but I identified an opportunity to transform the format into an intense psychological thriller. The challenge was to shift a passive audience into active participants, using a multi-layered narrative to force guests out of their comfort zones and radically change the guest dynamic from observer to ‘test subject’.

The Concept:
Outbreak – a high-intensity, two-hour immersive experience set within a covert government facility.

My creative response centred on ‘Social Compliance’ – using a mundane, clinical ‘lab tour’ as a mask for a high-intensity survival experience. My role encompassed the attraction’s full narrative architecture, from original scriptwriting and brand identity to environmental signage. By focusing on a psychological ‘twist’ within the story, we created a distinctive experience where curiosity quickly evolved into a nightmare!

The Experience:
By leveraging psychological tension over standard jump-scares, we moved guests from a state of intrigue to total immersion. This project proved that through sophisticated storytelling and ‘Experience Engineering’, we can transform a standard walkthrough into an intense adventure where the guest’s own choices and nervous system become part of the show.

The Storyline:
'Viral Life Science' a covert government lab has announced an open day for guests to tour their top-secret facility.

When a fortunate few arrive in Brighton, they are checked in and stamped by a lab worker before boarding a guarded bus to this top-secret location.

During their visit, guests are informed of a new product, NX-14, which is currently undergoing development. Aimed at military personal, NX-14 is a supplement that boosts endurance, improves sensory perception and removes the requirement of sleep.

As their tour continues, there's a growing sense that something isn't quite right about this facility...

At this point, a video plays informing guests the stamp they received upon arrival was actually a development strain of NX-14 and they must now serve as 'test subjects' to the facility. Guests have one hour to locate the antidote whilst being observed on a number of cognitive and physical tasks. Failure to comply and the unpredictable side effects of NX-14 will take over their nervous system.

As the experience progresses, guests discover they are not alone as former 'test subjects' start to take over the facility.

Curiosity of this seemingly innocent open day has now become your worst nightmare!
